Ultraviolet (U/V) tracers are specifically formulated to fluoresce when exposed to U/V light. From this come the commercial names for the two major products using this technology: U/V tracer and U/V lamps.

According to the visible light spectrum, true U/V light is invisible to the human eye, while nearby visible colors are violet and blue. The total intensity of U/V light decreases as we move from invisible U/V to violet, then to blue and beyond. One must not mistake a high-output visible blue lamp for a better product over one properly tuned for true U/V light.

Thats why BLUE is not necessarily OK.
A correctly tuned U/V lamp should emit predominantly invisible U/V wavelengths with only a trace of visible violet or blue light. This small amount of visible light helps guide the users eyes to the inspection area, while the invisible U/V rays actually illuminate the fluorescent tracer.

Lamps emitting high levels of blue light have often been marketed as stronger and more effective for fluorescence, based on their more visible output. However, true U/V tracers require invisible U/V light to fluoresce, contradicting this claim. These high-output blue lamps require special anti-blue glasses to reduce the glare, or the bright blue light will overpower the fluorescence and obscure the tracer.
